Body Parts Brokers

Body parts brokers make hundreds of millions of dollars selling products crafted from donated human bodies, even though it is illegal to profit from cadaver parts.

Skin from cadavers is used on the lips of fashion models at uop to $1,000 a shot. Dentists use ground bone nearly 200,000 times each year as treatments for their patients. Body parts brokers advertise 650 products made from body parts.

One cadaver can yield raw materials worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Grieving families are not told that their gifts fuel a $1 billion industry in body parts. Products made from body parts supplied by brokers help athletes return to the playing field, solve bladder troubles and allow the blind to see.

There is no doubt that the trade in body parts helps the injured and ill to live better, but it has also raised questions from donor families and medical ethicists about ties between companies that sell body parts and nonprofit organizations that solicit them.

Families are not told that body part brokers sell donated skin that goes to enlarge penises or smooth out wrinkles. They are also not told that nonprofit groups pay their executives six-figure salaries.

Many are calling for the FDA to require more record-keeping and better assurance measures in tissue banks, but the regulation of body brokers and the parts they sell remain untouched.
